FAQ

What is mental health?

At Hyphenated Therapy Center, I aim to destigmatize mental health and normalize the complexity of having emotional reactions to everyday life. Considering our mental health is just as important as considering our medical, emotional, and even spiritual needs. We are multi-faceted beings with many components to explore, acknowledge, and accept as we learn to fluctuate with our environment. At any moment, we can experience a stress-inducing event that can pull us out of our comfort zone. We all handle those situations differently, as our past experiences condition the ways that our body and mind respond to stressors. If you’re going through something that feels challenging, or if you just have a lot on your mind, it’s really healthy and important to talk about it.

How does therapy work?

Most of us are not raised to identify and articulate our emotions. So, it’s pretty common to experience the effects of unmet emotional needs. Sometimes these unmet needs can prevent us from forming meaningful relationships. And the word relationship is really used to describe any type of relationship, whether it is to ourselves, our friends, our community, our passions, or our future.

Anti-oppressive psychotherapy is a space where we work together to reclaim your innate tools and use them to cope with things that once felt immovable. Coming from a trauma-informed and multi-cultural lens, we emphasize the importance of a therapeutic space that embraces curiosity.

This is your time to invite feelings to come up and sit with the discomfort as we explore their impact.

What is intergenerational trauma?

Intergenerational trauma is a term that acknowledges the influence of adversity and its ability to be passed down across generations. Those living with intergenerational trauma can experience physical, emotional, and social challenges that may impact their connections with themselves, others, and the world. Intergenerational trauma sometimes requires a person to hold multiple identities and possess many layers, making it difficult to be expressive and outward with emotions.

Our bodies and perceptions are a walking history of our intergenerational trauma stories.

Let’s interrupt the cycle!

What does progress look like?

I am here to collaborate with you towards your personal goals. In order to do that, I will follow your lead, as you share insight into your thoughts and beliefs. Together, we will explore any potential barriers that are getting in the way of manifesting your best self.

Self-discovery does not have to be a linear process. We embrace the highs and lows along the way. It’s just part of the journey.
